RMMS Chorus Wins Another Gold Medal

Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS) took home the gold medal at the Fantastic Festivals chorus competition held on Friday, June 1, 2018. Forty-five elementary schools and forty middle schools from across New England, New York and New Jersey participated in the competition at Chippens Hill Middle School in Bristol, Connecticut.  Kevin Salley, Mr. K., directs the choral group of fourth and fifth graders who come from the across the southeastern region of Connecticut.

This year marks the fourth trip to the festival for the RMMS chorus. As a testament to the hard work by the students and the leadership of Mr. Salley, the chorus has left each competition with a gold award. This year, the students sang a variety of vocal selections: "Antiphonal Kyrie" a two-part song in Latin, the two-part piece "River Song," and an original three part arrangement of the round, "The Ghost of John."  When asked about what has led to such impressive results, Mr. K shared, “We have a successful 4th and 5th grade chorus because of a strong music education program beginning in kindergarten. We take a holistic approach, focusing on appreciation, composition, note reading, and performance through a lens of a multicultural and global repertoire.”
