Music Standards for Music Education & RMMS

National Standards for Music Education

  1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
  4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
  5. Reading and notating music.
  6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
  7. Evaluating music and music performances.
  8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
  9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

 

Music at RMMS

Kindergarten (all of these are taught throughout the year)

Singing

(standards 1, 3, 9)

  • solfege and rote
  • simple songs from various cultures
  • improvisation on simple note patterns
Reading

(standard 5)

  • simple rhythms consisting of quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes that are two to four measures in length (standard notation)
  • simple note patterns
  • short songs with and without accompaniment
Performing Instruments (standards 2, 5)
Cultural Studies

(standards 6, 7, 8, 9) (6 week unit)

  • listening to, moving to, and analyzing music from different cultures from all over the world
  • studying instruments from many different world cultures
  • identifying where the music comes from on the world map

 

1st Grade (all of these are taught throughout the year)

Singing

(standards 1, 3, 7)

  • solfege and rote
  • simple songs from various cultures
  • improvisation on simple note patterns
Reading

(standard 5)

  • simple rhythms consisting of quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes that are two to four measures in length (standard notation)
  • simple note patterns
  • short songs with and without accompaniment

Cultural Studies

(standards 6, 7, 8, 9) (6 week unit)

  • listening to, moving to, and analyzing music from different cultures from all over the world

2nd Grade

Singing

(standards 1, 5) (8 week unit, split class with drumming)

  • simple songs from standard notation and rote (American folk songs)
Reading

(standard 5)

    • begin to learn standard notation for pitched instruments on the staff
  • rhythms consisting of quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes that are 4 to 12 measures in length (performed on drums)
Performing Instruments

(standards 2, 5, 7)

  • piano - individual and class instruction one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class recital
  • drums - one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class performance and assessment
    (class is split with 8 week singing unit) (see also reading)
Cultural Studies

(standards 6, 7, 8, 9) (6 week unit)

  • listening to, moving to, and analyzing music from different cultures from all over the world
  • studying instruments from many different world cultures

3rd Grade

Singing

(standards 1, 5) (8 week unit, split class with drumming)

  • Rounds (two to four part harmony)
Reading

(standard 5)

 

  • continue to study standard notation for pitched instruments
  • rhythm songs consisting of quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and eighth rests that are 4 to 12 measures in length (performed on drums)
Performing Instruments

(standards 2, 5, 7)

  • piano - individual and class instruction one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class recital
  • drums - one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class performance and assessment
    (class is split with 8 week singing unit) (see also reading)
Cultural Studies

(standards 6, 7, 8, 9) (6 week unit)

  • Opera – students experience 4 different pieces of opera through music and storytelling, analyzing and evaluating each work

 

4th Grade

Singing (8 week unit, split class with drumming)
  • 2 & 3 part harmonies on more advanced songs
Reading

(standard 5)

  • more advanced musical notation and interpretation of musical symbols
  • more advanced rhythms
Performing Instruments

(standards 2, 5, 7)

  • piano: individual and class instruction one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class recital
  • ukulele: class instruction one 8 week unit focusing on string instrument technique, and accompaniment culminating in an in class recital
  • drums one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class performance and assessment (class is split with 8 week singing unit) (see also reading)
  • chorus: elective extra curricular activity that meets from 8:55 to 9:25 one to three times a week. The chorus performs many within the school community at various events and at other events outside the school.
Composition

(standards 3, 4, 5, 6)

  • digital composition project with emphasis on form, structure, musical expression, and digital recording techniques
Cultural Studies

(standards 6, 7, 8, 9) (6 week unit)

  • Opera – students experience 4 different pieces of opera through music and storytelling, analyzing and evaluating each work

 

5th Grade

Singing (standards 1, 5) (8 week unit, split class with drumming)
  • 2 & 3 part harmonies on more advanced songs
  • genres like jazz, rock, sacred, pop, folk, and traditional
Reading

(standard 5)

  • continue with more advanced musical notation and interpretation of musical symbols
  • rhythms consisting of quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, eighth rests, dotted quarter notes, and eight/sixteenth combinations that are 4 to 12 measures in length
Performing Instruments

(standards 2, 5, 7)

  • piano: individual and class instruction one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class recital
  • ukulele: class instruction one 8 week unit focusing on string instrument technique, and accompaniment culminating in an in class recital
  • drums one or two 8 week units culminating in an in class performance and assessment (class is split with 8 week singing unit) (see also reading)
