Dear RMMS Families,

As the director of the Regional Multicultural Magnet School, I am pleased to be a member of the wonderful RMMS community. I have observed an incredible amount of pride in RMMS from parents, teachers, students and staff. It is clear that the partnership between school staff and parents focuses on what is best for children from a multicultural perspective. I am truly honored to be the principal and to work together to provide the best possible educational program for our students.

Before coming to RMMS, my career has been dedicated to helping children accomplish high levels of learning no matter what their background or circumstance. While I spent ten years in various grade levels as an English teacher in the United States, I spent two of those years as a curriculum coordinator in a bilingual school in South America. Additionally, I worked for two years as a peer coach, spent two years supervising ten elementary schools as a central office Supervisor of Instruction, and four years as an elementary school principal. I hold bachelors and masters degrees in Education from the University of Connecticut, as well as a doctorate from Central Connecticut State University. I have received extensive training in literacy development, and I am dedicated to preparing students for our increasingly global 21st century world.

On a personal note, I come from a family of educators. My father was a former chemistry teacher who became a professor of education at the University of Connecticut, and my mother was a former English and German teacher who became an award-winning middle-school principal. In my family, education was always thought of as the doorway to opportunity and choice. Being second generation American, I was raised with the belief that only through learning about others, including their language and their culture, can we truly understand our selves within our world. As an educator myself, I believe that there is nothing more rewarding than watching children smile with pride, or as our school motto implies, “treasure their own uniqueness” with the confidence that they have been challenged and mastered a new skill or concept in their own way.

In closing, as the Principal of the Regional Multicultural Magnet School, it is my goal to provide leadership that will facilitate a safe and caring school environment that fulfills our school mission. I truly believe that through working together with families, we can further develop our school community to help students respect and learn about the cultural diversity that makes up our world in a way that empowers all learners and develops compassionate young people who are prepared to take responsibility for making positive changes in our society.

Please feel free to come by my office to meet me or talk. I look forward to getting to know you and working together in the future.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Susan C. Iwanicki
